Dava Guerin tells stories of the struggles facing wounded veterans and their families.

LARGO – In honor of those who have served in the US military, the city of Largo hosts an annual Veterans Day Ceremony.

At this year’s ceremony, Largo’s event planning committee, comprised of representatives from American Veterans Legion Post 119, the Korean War Veterans, the Disabled American Veterans and Serenity Gardens, will award the first Barbara Bush Citizen Patriot Award. The award, named after former First Lady Barbara Bush, was created to honor Bush’s selfless work on behalf of veterans.

This year’s recipient will be Dava Guerin, co-author, of Unbreakable Bonds: The Mighty Moms and Wounded Warriors of Walter Reed, and the author of Vets and Pets: Wounded Warriors and the Animals That Help Them Heal.

Dava Guerin

Unbreakable Bonds tells ten touching stories of mothers who spent years aiding the recovery of their children – U.S. soldiers and Marines who have suffered severe injuries during military conflicts. Together they have raised awareness of how our military service members and their families struggle with visible and invisible wounds during the deployment process, and how the people and animals in their lives have made all the difference in their recovery.

At the 2017 Veterans Day event, the city will host wounded warriors from Unbreakable Bonds and other wounded veterans featured in Vets and Pets.

The ceremony will begin at 11:11am this morning (Nov. 11) at Largo Central Park, 101 Central Park Drive in Largo.

Join the celebration after the ceremony. Live bands, military vehicle displays, free flight bird presentations, youth activities and food trucks will all be a part of the celebration, which last until 4 p.m.
