GULFPORT – Internationally renowned human rights activist John Prendergast is scheduled to speak about genocide during an event Thursday (March 16) as part of the Florida Holocaust Museum’s Genocide and Human Rights Awareness Movement (GHRAM).

“John Prendergast raises the bar for all of us as he continues to work for peace and justice in Africa. We hope that his work, his compassion and his resolve will inspire people of all ages to find tangible ways to make positive change in our community and our world,” said Elizabeth Gelman, executive director of the Florida Holocaust Museum.

Presented by Bank of America, Prendergast will discuss the first genocide in the 21st century, the Darfur Genocide, which began in 2003 and continues today. Prendergast is a best-selling author who has focused on peace in Africa for more than 30 years. He is the founding director of the Enough Project, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity. He is also the co-Founder of the Sentry, a new investigative initiative focused on dismantling the networks that finance conflict and atrocities.

“The Florida Holocaust Museum is committed to the intrinsic worth and dignity of human life,” said Bill Goede, Tampa Bay president, Bank of America. “We’re fortunate to have the Museum in our community – and to hear from great speakers like John – to ensure issues like human rights are not forgotten.”
