Flags at Half-Staff to Honor Fallen Police Officers

Today (May 15) is Peace Officers Memorial Day. It is the start to Police Week.

TAMPA BAY – If you see flags at half-staff today, it’s because it’s Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is designed to honor fallen police officers.

The memorial day also serves as the start of Police Week, which runs from today (May 15) through. Saturday (May 21). The day and week honoring police officers were created Oct. 1, 1962 by a joint resolution of Congress. May 15 was chosen to honor the fallen and the week in which it falls was designated as Police Week to honor all officers throughout the U.S.

This year, President Barack Obama issued the declaration:

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2016, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 15 through May 21, 2016, as Police Week.  I call upon all Americans to observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities.  I also call on the Governors of the United States and its Territories, and appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day.  I further encourage all Americans to display the flag at half-staff from their homes and businesses on that day.”

We at TB Reporter thank the Bay area’s police officers for the work they do. We also thank them and their families for the sacrifices they make.
