High school teams from across the U.S. and Canada will be competing. Drivers should expect delays on Boyette Road from today (Dec. 29) through Saturday (Dec. 31).

WESLEY CHAPEL – The Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions begins today at Wesley Chapel District Park.

This will be the ninth consecutive year the tournament, which features championship high school players, will be at the park, 33544, 7727 Boyette Road. The tournament has an estimated economic impact of $3 million for Pasco County, officials said.

“This has been our anchor sporting event for many years,” said Chairwoman Kathryn Starkey of the Pasco County Commission and Tourist Development Council. “We are glad to have them back again.”

The tournament consistently features the continent’s top high school and youth players. Past participants have gone on to compete in the collegiate championships, and many are now stars in the National Lacrosse League and Major League Lacrosse. More than one dozen tournament alumni competed in the 2014 World Lacrosse Championships.

This year, the tournament will be run in conjunction with the Dick’s Sporting Goods Florida Finale tournament.

The Florida Finale event, like the pre-collegiate national championship, will feature high school elite and rising stars. The biggest difference is the invitation process.Teams must earn bids to compete in the Dicks’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions. Entry into the Dick’s Sporting Goods Florida Finale is open to all teams that participate in an official qualifying tournament this year that do not earn a national championship bid.

The two events start today (Dec. 29) and run through Saturday (Dec. 31). Pasco County officials have issued traffic advisories for the area around the park and are telling drivers to expect heavy traffic and delays on Boyette Road for the next three days. They are asking the drivers reduce speed on Boyette to allow participants and visitors access to the tournament.
