Hillsborough Schools to Remember Sept. 11

Hillsborough schools have planned activities designed to remember Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor those who lost their lives that day and others who sacrificed their lives.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – Eighteen years after the tragic events that unfolded Sept. 11, 2001, students and staff in Hillsborough County Public Schools will remember the victims of that day and honor the heroes who sacrificed their own lives to save others.

Here are just a few of the events scheduled in schools:

Today (Sept. 10) and Wednesday (Sept. 11) – Memorial Markers – Franklin Boys Preparatory Academy, 3915 E. 21st Ave., Tampa. From 8:45 a.m.-10:30 a.m. today, students will create 2,799 memorial markers to represent lives lost during the terrorist attacks. Wednesday students will place the memorial markers on the school’s front lawn throughout the day, with the final placement at the end of the day. They will also hear from guest speakers about their experiences on Sept. 11.

8 a.m. Wednesday – Ribbons to Remember Ceremony, Nelson Elementary School, 5413 Durant Road, Dover. Students and staff will gather in the school’s courtyard for a brief ceremony. Representatives of the military and first responders will place ribbons on trees to commemorate the events of that day. The Durant High School ROTC Color Guard will participate in the presentation of the colors.

9 a.m. Wednesday – Sept. 11 Ceremony, Freedom High School, 17410 Commerce Park Blvd., Tampa. Students and staff will gather in the courtyard for a presentation, including a brief timeline of the tragic events that day, the playing of Taps, the National Anthem and the presentation of colors by the school’s Color Guard. Freedom High School was named in honor of those who lost their lives Sept. 11, 2001.

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday. – Flag Display, Randall Middle School, 16510 Fishhawk Blvd., Lithia. Classes will visit the large flag display outside the school on the front lawn throughout the day.
