Chase a Mermaid in Hernando
Proceeds from the first-ever Mermaid Chase 4K Paddling Race will be donated to establish a salt marsh grass nursery at the Gulf Coast Academy of Science and Technology for coastal restoration projects in Hernando County.
HERNANDO COUNTY – Be one of the first to experience the new Bayport-Linda Pedersen Paddling Trail during the inaugural Mermaid Chase 4K Paddling Race scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 8.
Participants will launch from and return to Linda Pedersen Park, located at 6300 Shoal Line Blvd. in Spring Hill, and have three hours to complete a 2.5-mile portion of the trail. Awards will be
given to the fastest paddlers. Participants must provide their own kayak. Food vendors will be on site.
Registration ends April 6. The early bird entry fee is $35 through March 24. The price increases to $40 on March 25. Proceeds will go to the Gulf Coast Academy of Science and Technology Center to build and maintain a salt marsh grass nursery to help complete living shoreline and fisheries enhancement projects along the Hernando County coastline.
“This is an exciting event for a great cause,” Chairman Wayne Dukes said. “This new coastal amenity will serve our residents and provide yet another reason for tourists to visit Hernando County’s Adventure Coast.”
The creation of the new Bayport-Linda Pedersen Paddling Trail was a collaborative effort among Hernando County Waterways, Extension, Tourism Development and Parks and Recreation departments. While kayaking, canoeing or paddle boarding this scenic trail through Jenkins Creek, with a short jaunt to Redfish Bayou, paddlers will be immersed in a vibrant, tidal estuary home to a variety of wildlife. Paddlers can access this nearly five-mile winding waterway for free from official launch sites at both Bayport, 4140 Cortez Blvd., and Linda Pederson parks.
