CLEARWATER – The city of Clearwater’s Community Redevelopment Agency has recently unveiled a second public art banner that is being displayed in downtown Clearwater.

Stephen Graff’s Waves and Raves was selected by the city to decorate and represent a fenced area that covers 474 feet along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue between Pierce and Gould streets in downtown Clearwater.

Graff’s artistic work is filled with a multitude of shapes and colors along with images celebrating life in Clearwater. The various lines and shapes represent water that serves as a significant natural resource in Clearwater. The assorted colors celebrate the growing population and the area’s changing demographics.

“This is the newest artistic banner installation in Downtown Clearwater, and it represents the Community Redevelopment Agency’s strategic direction and commitment to public art,” said Laura Canary, community redevelopment coordinator for the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency.

“The CRA is dedicated to incorporating public art into our programming and projects as a means of revitalization,” Canary said. “One installation at a time, public art can transform a landscape, enhance the surrounding environment and promote collective community expression.”

Graff, 64, lives in Palm Harbor. He works in multiple mediums, including pastels, acrylics, graphite, photography and found objects. He has completed artistic and creative designs for the city of Indian Shores, including a monument for the city.

Last year, the city’s CRA announced a call to artists to design an artistic banner. Artist Jennie Pearl’s design was selected, and her artistic banner is displayed at 1274 Cleveland St.

Graff’s design is being displayed on a vacant lot owned by the city’s CRA. Nelson Construction is using the location as a staging area as its staff performs streetscape work in downtown Clearwater. Nelson Construction paid for the banner.

“We’re very fortunate to have community partners such as Nelson Construction,” Canary said. “This project was truly a collaborative effort by all parties.”
