Age-friendly communities, a designation given by the AARP,  strive to promote active, happy and healthy lifestyles for people of all ages.

PINELLAS COUNTY – The AARP designated Pinellas County an age-friendly community during Tuesday’s (April 25) County Commission meeting.

With this designation, Pinellas joins a network of more than 400 communities around the world that are committed to promoting greater health and well-being for people of all ages.

“We are so proud to join the age-friendly network that makes us a part of the larger movement across the nation,” Pinellas County Commission Chair Janet C. Long said. “Being an Age-Friendly Community signifies our board’s commitment to make Pinellas County a place that residents of all ages want to live, work, play and thrive in.”

Pinellas County and partners will work on information gathering through community surveys, listening sessions and research with the goal of completing a countywide action plan.

Age-friendly communities strive to promote active, happy and healthy lifestyles for people of all ages through interconnected domains of livability, which include: outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, community support and health services. Pinellas County has added two categories: emergency management and security and safety.

The county’s age-friendly Initiative, which is comprised of a diverse group of stakeholders, including executives from community agencies, policy makers, academia, and personnel from key county departments, seeks to enhance these domains locally with a collective goal to create a community where older adults can stay active, engaged, and healthy.

The AARP Network of age-friendly communities is an affiliate of the World Health Organization’s global network of age-friendly cities and communities. The global network includes cities and communities from 37 countries around the world, serving more than 146 million people.
