Hurricane Irma | Weather | Tropical Storm

The first Food for Florida site opened in Seminole today (Sept. 27). The program offers emergency food benefits to victims of hurricanes or other types of disasters. It is intended to help those who typically do not need assistance, but for the effects of Hurricane Irma.

SEMINOLE – A food program designed to provide emergency help for victims of Hurricane Irma opened this morning (Sept. 27) in Seminole.

This is the first Food for Florida site to open in the state. Another six sites are planned around Florida.

“It is a positive statement about our community to be selected to be the first site in the state of Florida for the Food For Florida Program,” said Ann Toney-Deal, Seminole city manager.

This program is a onetime electronic benefits transfer card for families who lost food as a result of Hurricane Irma. This is not assistance for families who are recipients of government assistance i.e. welfare, food stamps, etc. It is intended to assist those who typically do not need assistance, but for the effects of Irma.

Food for Florida is the name of Florida’s Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The Food for Florida program offers emergency food benefits to victims of hurricanes or other types of disasters, and is only active when there is a presidentially declared disaster area in the state of Florida. The declaration must be for “individual assistance” and be approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Services.

Food for Florida provides benefits to applicants who are not currently receiving food benefits through regular SNAP. There are several income and asset requirements and the applicants must have been living in the declared disaster area at the time of the disaster. If eligible, recipients will receive disaster food assistance benefits that will be accessed using an EBT card.

The Seminole Food for Florida program site will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Monday (Oct. 2) at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. N.
