Police say they have identified the shooter but had made no arrests as of late Wednesday (May 24).

TAMPA – The former employee of a body shop died Wednesday (May 24) after he was shot during a physical altercation with the owner, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Benjamin Rodriguez Barral, 41, of Tampa, died of his injuries.

Sometime after 10 a.m., police said Mr. Barral went to the AA Auto Body shop at 1904 W Columbus Drive. Mr. Barral, a former employee of the shop, got into a heated discussion with the owner, Alex Alfonso, 34. That escalated into a physical altercation in the parking lot, which led to Alfonso’s producing a firearm and shooting Barral, according to police.

Alfonso left the scene of the shooting in a red Corvette. A short time later, police said, Alfonso returned to the scene in a different car where he cooperated with officers who were on the scene.

At this time, Alfonso has not been charged with a crime. Tampa police said they are working with the State Attorney’s Office to determine what charges, if any, might be applicable in this case. The case remains under investigation.
