The man was about 10 stories – 200 feet – in the air, Tampa Fire Rescue said.

TAMPA – Firefighters here scaled a crane Wednesday (May 10) to reach the operator who needed medical help and lower him to the ground, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Tampa General Hospital.

Firefighters got a call for a medical emergency about 8:30 a.m. for the operator of a construction crane at 1115 E Twiggs St. When firefighters, who are cross-trained as emergency medical technicians or paramedics, arrived, they had to scale the crane with all their gear so they could reach the operator. The operator was about 10 stories, or 200 feet, above the ground in the cab of the crane.

Once they got to the crane operator, firefighters first put him in a harness and lowered him to a basket that could be lowered to the ground using the crane. When the man was stable, they placed him in the basket and lowered it to the ground while a firefighter was tethered to the basket to accompany him to the ground. The patient was on the ground at 10:17 a.m. and was then placed on a gurney and loaded into a waiting rescue vehicle so he could be taken to Tampa General Hospital.
