ST. PETE BEACH – Deputies are investigating the drowning of a man Sunday (Oct. 1) in the Gulf of Mexico, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Bret Alexander Rule, 34, of Port Charlotte, was pronounced dead at Palms of Pasadena Hospital where he was taken after he was pulled from the water.

Deputies said Mr. Rule was last seen alone on the beach. Witnesses said he was acting incoherent and appeared to be intoxicated. He entered the water sometime between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. but did not return.

A passerby found Mr. Rule unconscious and pulled him ashore behind the Plaza Beach Motel at 4506 Gulf Blvd.

St. Pete Beach Fire Department paramedics arrived on scene and tried life-saving measures, then took him to Palms of Pasadena.

Deputies said alcohol and/or drugs appear to be factors in his death.
