One Dead After Deputy-Involved Shooting

The call came in as a domestic violence incident, Hillsborough deputies said.

RUSKIN – One man is dead after deputies shot him when he threatened them with a knife, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

The name of the 37-year-old deceased man is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. He died at a hospital where he was taken after the shooting. Deputies said he had 30 prior felony charges including Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Aggravated Assault, Domestic Battery, Aggravated Child Abuse, and Carjacking. Had he lived, he would likely have faced a a charge of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.

Deputies said they were called to a home in the 300 block of Shell Manor Road for a domestic violence call around 1:30 a.m. today (July 5).

They found a man waving a large knife in the front yard of the home. A woman and several children were inside the home. The man refused to put the knife down and approached deputies in a threatening manner.

Master Deputy Jessica Ennis and Deputy Daniel DeLima, in fear for their lives, said they fired multiple shots at the man. He was medevaced from the scene. Ennis, 37, has been with HCSO for 12 years. DeLima, 25, has been with HCSO for 3 years.

As protocol, both deputies involved in the shooting are on administrative leave during the investigation. No further information is available at this time.
