The man was suicidal, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

CLEARWATER – A man died early today (Oct. 19) of injuries he received when shot by a police officer who was in fear of his life, the Clearwater Police Department said.

Mitchell Fox, 34, of Clearwater died at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he was taken after the shooting.

The officer involved in the shooting, Christopher Fowler, has been placed on administrative duty, which is standard in such cases. The shooting is being investigated by the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office and reviewed internally. Fowler has worked for the Clearwater department since Nov. 12, 2016.

Police were called to the Sands of Clearwater apartment complex, 2150 Druid Road, about 12:27 a.m. on a report of an armed suicidal man. Officers said they came into contact with Mr. Fox, who was armed with a gun.

Mr. Fox refused orders to drop the weapon. Police said he was shot as he threatened an officer on scene.

Officers immediately began performing life-saving measures on Mr. Fox until he was taken to the hospital.
