Meet the Finalists for Largo Fire Chief

Five finalists for the job of Largo’s next fire chief will meet the public, officials and be interviewed over the next two days.

LARGO – Five finalists – three of them from the Tampa Bay area – for the job of Largo fire chief will spend the next two days in Largo undergoing tours, interviews and meeting residents and officials.

The five – Bruce Angier from Broward County, William “Trip” Barrs from Dunedin Fire and Rescue, Mark Davis from the Charleston (SC) Fire Department, Chad Pittman from Palm Harbor Fire Rescue, and Susan Tamme from Tampa Fire Rescue – will spend most of Thursday (Aug. 23) visiting the city’s fire departments and getting to know Largo. Thursday evening they’ll be at a “meet and greet” with Largo city commissioners and members of the public from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the Community Room at the Largo City Hall, 201 Highland Ave. The meet and greet is open to the public.

On Friday (Aug. 24), they’ll under go interviews.

This is the second group of finalists to interview for the job. Earlier this year, city officials interviewed three finalists but City Manager Henry Schubert turned them all down, saying, “The interview process did not result in a clear choice for the position. After conducting additional research on the candidates and giving the decision much thought, I have decided to not make a selection from the current candidate pool.” (Click here for story.)

The finalists:

Bruce Angier, district fire chief with the Broward Sheriff’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services where he has worked since June 2014. He is assigned to the city of Weston. He has about 30 years’ experience in the fire service and has worked as a firefighter, paramedic, driver operator, public information officer, operations officer, emergency medical services division chief, and operations battalion chief.

William “Trip” Barrs, deputy fire chief for Dunedin Fire and Rescue. He has worked for the Dunedin department since 1992 and has served as a firefighter/paramedic, fire lieutenant, shift commander, and division chief of training. He is the disaster response task force/strike team leader. In that latter capacity, he was deployed in response to both Hurricane Matthew and Collier County wildfire responses.

Mark Davis is the deputy fire chief with the Charleston (SC) Fire Department where he has worked since 1995. He has served in most positions including training chief, safety officer and special ops as well as his current job as deputy chief.

Chad Pittman is the deputy chief of operations at Palm Harbor Fire Rescue. He began his career in 1992 as a volunteer firefighter with the Palm Harbor department and moved to East Lake Fire Rescue as a firefighter/paramedic in 1990. He moved back to the Palm Harbor department in 1992 as a firefighter/paramedic and worked his way up through the ranks becoming a lieutenant and district chief before becoming deputy chief of operations.

Susan Tamme is the only woman in the group. She is division chief of training at Tampa Fire Rescue and is an instructor at Leary Technical Institute in Tampa and the Five Bugles Institute in Tampa Bay. She is a former instructor at Hillsborough Community College. She has worked her way up through the ranks and has held the jobs of lieutenant, captain and district fire chief.
