BROOKSVILLE – Firefighters discovered the body of a man after a late-night fire at a Brooksville home, according to Hernando County Fire Rescue.

The name of the deceased man was being withheld until his next of kin are notified.

Firefighters said they responded to a reported residential structure fire at 6444 Barclay Ave. about 11:44 p.m. Tuesday (April 30). Bystanders said that there might be someone inside. They said they tried to call for the person by knocking on the door but got no response.

The first firefighters on scene arrived within four minutes and reported a fully involved structure fire. A portion of the roof collapsed before firefighters could begin fighting the flames.

Firefighters were able to search for the victim during the fire in the non-collapsed portion of the home using a bedroom window to get inside. Despite these efforts, the victim was not found until subsequent searches when conditions allowed them to get inside to search.

The Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations has been called to investigate the fire. No information on the cause is available at this time.

HCFR would like to remind the community to have and regularly check their home smoke detectors.Hernando Fire | Fatal Fire | TB Reporter
