A dog died in the blaze. No humans were injured, Tampa Fire Rescue said.

TAMPA – A dog died in a house fire Friday (Aug. 24) that was apparently started when lightning stuck the home, Tampa Fire Rescue said.

Firefighters were called to the house on W San Jose Street about 7:30 pm.

When they arrived, firefighters said they saw heavy smoke and flames shooting through the roof of the single-story home. The fire was so intense that crews were unable to enter the structure. Firefighters used an aerial unit to knock down the flames located at the rear of the home until it was safe to search inside.

There were no occupants at home at the time but a dog died in the fire.

Based on reports from neighbors it appears as if the fire started because of a lightning strike. Investigators are working to verify the cause.
