A Pinellas sheriff’s lieutenant and sergeant graduated from the Florida Leadership Academy that was held by the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

PINELLAS COUNTY – Lt. Jeff Kanehl and Sgt. Michael Sherman were graduated Friday (April 7) from the Florida Criminal Justice Institute’s, Florida Leadership Academy, at the Southwest Florida Public Service Academy.

Kanehl has worked for the sheriff’s office since Jan. 10, 2001. Sherman has been with the department since May 7, 2001.

The graduating class included 39 first-line supervisors from across the state who serve in leadership roles within their agencies.

The graduates met for four week-long sessions at the Southwest Florida Public Service Academy in Fort Myers. They learned skills necessary to support the needs of their agencies and their communities as they prepared for future challenges.

The goal of the Florida Leadership Academy is to prepare first-line supervisors in criminal justice organizations to exemplify the character and integrity expected of criminal justice professionals and to examine the various components necessary to being an efficient leader.

The Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute, which is housed within the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and affiliated with the State University System, was established in 1990 by the Florida Legislature to address the need for an innovative and multifaceted approach to the education and training of criminal justice professionals.
