Two Homes Condemned as Pasco Sinkhole Grows

Land O' Lakes Sinkhole | Pasco County | United Way

The sinkhole has grown by about 30 feet, according to Pasco County.

LAND O’ LAKES – Two more homes were condemned this morning (Aug 6), making a total of six homes that have been lost to a sinkhole that opened up last month, Pasco County officials said.

The houses condemned this morning are at 3153 Canal Place and 21748 Ocean Pines Drive. Two homes at 21814 and 21815 Ocean Pines Drive in the Lake Padgett area of Land O’ Lakes were condemned Friday after they showed signs that the foundations had shifted. The house at 21814 Ocean Pines had already been evacuated. The condemnation of the house at 21815 means the building is unsafe and residents are not allowed inside.

Eleven homes were originally impacted by the sinkhole. Of those 11, two homes were destroyed and nine were evacuated the day the sinkhole formed. Five homeowners were allowed to return July 16. And, now, two homes have been condemned. Pasco County Human Services is working to help homeowners and those in need can call the United Way at 211.

Pasco officials said the sinkhole grew by about 30 feet between Thursday night (Aug. 3) and Satursday (Aug. 5). Previously, the sinkhole was between 225 feet to 235 feet wide. Now, it is about 260 feet wide at its widest point, but most of it is about 180 feet wide.

The expansion in the sinkhole caused Ceres Construction, which is handling debris cleanup, had to stop work because of the sinkhole’s instability. Ceres is expected to continue working through the weekend and will bring in dump trucks full of lime and boulders today. The lime and boulders will be used to try stabilizing one side of the sinkhole so a small barge can be used to clear debris rather than trying to work from the sides of the sinkhole.

Officials say four safety officers are watching the sinkhole in case there are further changes.
