Historic Stilt House Destroyed by Fire

The fire began when lightning struck the house, which was known for the American flag painted on its wall.

PORT RICHEY – An historic Pasco landmark was destroyed by fire Saturday (Aug. 25) night,

The stilt home, known locally as the “American flag stilt home,” was a total loss and firefighters remained on scene late Saturday mopping up hot spots.The fire was caused by a lightning strike,  according to Pasco County Fire Rescue.

There are no injuries reported and no one was inside the stilt home at the time of the fire.

Pasco firefighters received a call about 7:50 p.m. received a call regarding a structure fire at a stilt home located over the Gulf of Mexico at the mouth of the Cotee River.

Firefighters arrived to find a stilt home in open water fully engulfed in flames. With help from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office marine units and a portable fire pump from Port Richey Fire Rescue, firefighters were able to battle the fire.

Because of the remote location of the fire, Pasco County Fire Rescue also requested mutual aid from Palm Harbor Fire Rescue’s fireboat.

Boaters in the area are asked to use caution because of the possibility of floating debris in the water.
