Hillsborough Deputy Kills Suicidal Man Armed with Knife
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said deputies had been called to the man’s home seven times since September, all for suicide attempts involving a knife.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A deputy shot and killed a suicidal Tampa man Tuesday (March 19) who was armed with a knife, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
Jesus Calderon, 52, of Tampa, died at AdventHealth where he was taken after the shooting. Deputies said they have been called to Mr. Calderon’s address seven times since last September for suicide attempts involving a knife. Mr. Calderon had also been arrested in July 2004 for Purchase and Possession of Cocaine (Violation of Probation); in March 2004 for Public Consumption of Alcohol; and in January 1999, June 1998, and July 1997 on DUI charges.
Master Deputy Kevin Stabins, 42, was placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated. Stabins has been with the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office for 19 years. He has no prior shootings on his record.
Stabins was suspended for five days in April 2007 for excessive or unnecessary force and failure to follow standard operating procedure, according to Hillsborough sheriff’s records. Stabins received letters of reprimand in June 2004 and December 2012 for failing to respond to a subpoena; another reprimand letter in May 2005 for damage to or loss of a motor vehicle from an avoidable traffic crash; and a letter of counseling in August 2014 for damage to or loss of a motor vehicle in an avoidable traffic crash.
Deputies said they were called to Calderon’s home about 1:16 p.m. after they received a call from a family member of the deceased saying Mr. Calderon was attempting to commit suicide.
Stabins responded to find Mr. Calderon armed with a knife and harming himself. Deputies said Stabins repeatedly ordered Mr. Calderon to put down the knife.
Mr. Calderon then approached Stabins with the knife in his hand in “an aggressive manner.” Stabins fired his service firearm multiple times, hitting Mr. Calderon.
The investigation is continuing.
