The deputy is a school resource officer at West Hernando Middle School.
BROOKSVILLE – A school resource officer helped save a middle school student who was choking, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputy Shane Landgraff was in the West Hernando Middle School cafeteria during seventh grade lunch period Tuesday (May 7) when he was told about a student in distress.
Landgraff, the Brooksville school’s assigned school resource officer, went over to the student who was holding their neck and chest and appeared to be choking.
When the student failed to respond, Landgraff immediately hit the choking student three times on the back, which caused the student to dislodge the stuck food. Landgraff then made sure the student was stable.
Once the student’s breathing returned to normal, the student was taken to the school nurse for further observation.
The student was able to make a full recovery and later returned to class.
