Narcan® nasal spray is used to reverse an opioid overdose.

SPRING HILL – A deputy was able to save the life of a man who had overdosed on opioids by using a Narcan® spray deputies were given earlier this year, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

This is the first success the deputies have had with the Narcan® sprays that the department issues in June.

The name of the patient was not released. He was taken to a hospital where doctors say he will likely make a full recovery.

Hernando County deputies and Hernando County Fire Rescue were dispatched about 10:30 p.m.Saturday (Aug. 17) to a home in Spring Hill regarding a possible overdose. The caller told the 9-1-1 dispatcher r that a man on scene had possibly overdosed accidentally and was neither conscious nor breathing.

Deputy Alex Covey and his trainee, Deputy Recruit Kevin Getz, were the first to arrive.

After assessing the patient and speaking with a person in the residence, the deputies said they learned the patient was a known narcotics user.  Additionally, the patient appeared to be suffering from a possible opioid overdose – unconscious with labored breathing and cyanotic lips.

Covey immediately administered his agency-issued Nasal Narcan® spray into the patient’s nostril. After about 60 seconds, the man regained consciousness. He was then taken to a hospital.
