ODESSA – A helicopter crashed into an Odessa home Monday afternoon, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said.

Bradley John Bates, 51, of Odessa, the pilot, was taken by ambulance to St. Joesph’s Hospital in Tampa. He is listed in stable condition.

Firefighters were called to a home in the 9400 block of Roberts Road about 5:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they saw a small single engine helicopter that had crashed through the roof.

Firefighters said Bates was alert and talking to rescuers. He was placed on a backboard and brought off of the roof then was taken by ambulance to St. Joesph’s. Bates was the only one in the helicopter, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The helicopter appeared to be homemade from a kit, deputies said.

The home was searched and only a dog was found inside the home. The dog was not hurt and was turned back over to its owner.

The crash will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration. The helicopter will remain in place until the NTSB makes the decision to remove it.
