Florida Gov. Rick Scott has ordered government flags to be flown at half-staff today(Oct. 9) in honor of the National Firefighters Memorial Service.

TAMPA BAY – State and local government flags will be at half-staff today to honor fallen firefighters across the U.S.

The order to lower the U.S. and Florida flags came Wednesday (Oct. 5) from Gov. Rick Scott:

“In honor and remembrance of the brave firefighters who have given their lives in service to our country and state, and in observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the state of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the state of Florida from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016.”

The National Firefighters Memorial Service is sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Every October, the Foundation sponsors the official national tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. The ceremonies take place in Emmitsburg, MD. The memorial service is scheduled at 10 a.m. There is also a candlelight service that will be held next door to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial at the National Shrine of Elizabeth Ann Seton, the Basilica of the Daughters of Charity. The service can be watched online live at live.firehero.org and on the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Facebook page. It is still scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. eastern time.
