FWC Investigates Fatal Boating Incident

The body of an Apollo Beach man was found in shallow water south of the Courtney Campbel Causeway.

PINELLAS COUNTY – The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the death of an Apollo Beach boater.

The body of Jose Vazquez, 61, of Apollo Beach, was found in shallow water south of the Courtney Campbell Causeway about 8 a.m. today (Aug. 21).

Rescuers had been searching for Mr. Vazquez since about 9 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 20) when an unmanned personal watercraft was spotted near the causeway. An overnight search was conducted by boat and air support for the missing boater.

The FWC is the lead agency on this incident, with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, and Tampa Police Department.
