The dog, which belonged to them, attacked when two of them tried to stop it from attacking another of their dogs.

SAFETY HARBOR – A mother and her two daughters were injured Friday (Nov. 24) after their pit bull dog attacked them.

Heidi Cooper, 45, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Meaghan Tokay, 14, and Sierra Wilson, 22, were taken to Bayfront with non-life threatening injuries.

Pinellas County sheriff’s deputies said they were called to the home on West Gate Drive about 4:07 p.m. for a report that a dog was attacking residents. When deputies arrived, they found Cooper and her daughter Meaghan suffering from multiple puncture wounds and cuts to their arms and legs. Wilson, Cooper’s other daughter, suffered from minor scratches.

A dead male pit bull was found lying in the front yard.

Deputies said the incident started when one of Cooper’s pit bulls, a male dog named Buster, got loose inside the home and started fighting with one of her other male pit bulls. When Cooper and Meaghan tried to stop the dogs from fighting, Buster turned and started attacking them.

Cooper and Meaghan were bitten numerous times while trying to fight off the dog. Cooper was seriously injured by the dog. Wilson witnessed the attack and rushed to their aide stabbing Buster several times with a knife. Buster died shortly afterward.

Deputies said a family member told them that the dog was normally kept in a separate room because he was known for being aggressive.

Pinellas County Animal Services came to the scene and took possession of the dog’s remains.
