TOWN N COUNTRY – Firefighters discovered three bodies in the rubble of an apartment building after a fire early Wednesday (May 15), Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is in the process of identifying them and notifying their next of kin.

Firefighters said they were called to the Captiva Apartments, 4541 Castaway Drive in Town N Country, about 3:30 a.m. When they arrived, they found flames penetrating the roof of an eight-unit block of apartments.  One building wall had collapsed because of the flames.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

During a search of an upper floor apartment on the north end of the building firefighters discovered the three bodies.

Eight apartments were damaged by fire, smoke and water. At least 12 residents were displaced and were helped by the Red Cross. There were no injuries to other residents or firefighters.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. HCSO and the State Fire Marshall are also investigating.
