3 Year Old Shot, Tampa Police Say

The boy is expected to survive, Tampa police said.

TAMPA – Officers are investigating an incident during which a 3-year-old boy was shot in the stomach, according to the Tampa Police Department.

The child, whose name was withheld, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. He is expected to survive.

Police said the shooting happened about 8:46 p.m. Monday (Jan. 7). When officers arrived, they found the 3 year old with a single gunshot wound across the stomach.

The investigation revealed that a young man might have been in the room with the child at the time of the incident. Police said the man is believed to have retrieved the firearm and fled the scene on foot before officers got there. No other witnesses were in the room at the time of the shooting, so the cause of the shooting has not been determined.

Police are searching for the man who fled the apartment after the shooting.
