20 Homeless after Tampa Apartment Fire

One woman was injured and two dogs died in the blaze, Hillsborough Fire Rescue said.

TAMPA – Twenty people were left homeless Tuesday (Dec. 13) after a cooking fire burned through an apartment building.

One woman was injured and two dogs died in the blaze.The Red Cross was called to the scene to help the displaced residents.

Hillsborough Fire Rescue said it began about 5:30 p.m. Firefighters said the resident of a first floor apartment told them he was cooking french fires when he left the room. When he returned, the kitchen was on fire. The fire spread through the building at the Cordova Apts., 12702 University Club Court, so that, when firefighters first arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the building. It took about 45 firefighters from Hillsborough and Tampa Fire Rescue about an hour to get the fire under control.

Firefighters said they found one injured victim, a woman who had jumped with one of her children from a second story balcony to escape the fire. Paramedics treated her and took her to the hospital.
