Students and local leaders are scheduled to hold community conversations in Tampa and New Port Richey to discuss potential gun control reform on both the local and national levels.

TAMPA BAY – Students from around the world spearheaded marches last month to call for an end to gun violence and call for common-sense gun control.

The marches were just the first step for the March for Our Lives movement. Now, the group formed by the survivors of the murders of 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland is holding town halls across the U.S. At least two of those will be in the Tampa Bay area Saturday (April 7). One will be in Tampa; the other, New Port Richey.

“March for Our Lives highlighted the public concern and outcry after recent tragic events,” according to organizers of the Tampa Bay Town Hall. “The goal of the student-led Town Hall for our Lives is to translate that concern into actionable goals on gun reform.”

The Tampa Bay Town Hall for Our Lives

It is hosted by We, the Students Inc. and March for Our Lives organizers. The town hall will feature a panel of students, ranging from high school to college. Organizers said it is
imperative to feature this age group because of their uniquely intimate perspective on campus safety. The event will close with some questions from the general public. The group will also call to the stage those who have been personally affected by gun violence in the Tampa-Bay area.

Among the leaders expected are U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa; former Tampa Chief of Police Jane Castor; Florida House candidate Debra Bellanti; State Attorney for the 13 ^th Judicial District Andrew Warren; and Marjory Stoneman Douglas student Susana Valdivieso.

The Tampa Bay Town Hall for Our Lives is scheduled for 3 p.m.to 5 p.m. at the Metropolitan Community Church, 408 E Cayuga St. in Tampa. Local community leaders will gather to have an open conversation with concerned citizens, and will discuss potential gun reform on both a local and national level.

Town Hall for Our Lives FL-12

This is also a student-led Town Hall against gun violence. Organizers said they are “fighting to protect our right to live and feel safe in our schools.”

  Among the leaders expected are Angelika Purkis and Robert Tager, both of whom are Democratic candidates for Florida’s 12th Congressional District, which is currently held by Republican Gus Bilirakis. (The FL-12 in the name of this Town Hall refers to the 12th Congressional District, which includes Pasco County.)

This Town Hall will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the New Port Richey Public Library, 5939 Main St. in New Port Richey.
