The clinic is designed to help former felons regain civil rights, such as the right to vote.

TAMPA BAY – State Rep. Sean Shaw, D-Tampa, is co-hosting a rights restoration clinic.

The clinic is designed to help former felons regain rights they lost when convicted of crimes. Clinic participants will receive information and access to resources to help put them on the path to restoration of their rights. The clinic is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (May 20) at Middleton High School, 4801 N 22nd St., Tampa.

Shaw is co-hosting the clinic with the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, which describes itself as a “non-partisan organization whose mission is to get Florida to join the approximately 40 states in the nation that automatically restore the civil rights of all individuals with past felony conviction upon completion of the non-monetary terms of their sentences. The FRRC address the issue of felon disfranchisement as it relates to voting, seeking employment, and obtaining safe and affordable housing, by highlighting the discriminatory history of felon disfranchisement and how it negatively impacts our economy and society as a whole.

“The FRRC is committed to educating the public about Florida’s civil rights ban, and assisting the over 1 million disfranchised Floridians in applying to regain their civil rights as well as understanding the policies and procedures of Florida’s civil rights restoration process.”
