Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is a candidate for governor who has previously spoken out against the “Stand Your Ground” law.

CLEARWATER – Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is scheduled to speak at a town hall in solidarity with the family and community of Markeis McGlockton on Sunday (July 29).

Gillum, a Democrat, is running to be the next governor of Florida.

The Upper Pinellas County Ministerial Alliance is hosting the town hall, which will include Clearwater Police Chief Daniel Slaughter and NAACP Clearwater/Upper Pinellas Branch President Marva McWhite. The town hall is at 4 p.m. at the Mt Carmel Baptist Church, 1012 Pennsylvania Ave, Clearwater.

Mr. McGlockton, 28, was shot and killed July 19 after he was shot during an argument over a handicapped parking space. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri has declined to file charges, saying the shooter, Michael Drejka, was standing his ground after he fell to the ground when Mr. McGlockton shoved him.

Gillum has previously spoken out against “Stand Your Ground,” including in a debate in Pinellas County on June 9. Gillum has been a passionate advocate on behalf of Trayvon Martin’s family, including during a Feb. 13 debate with Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran, and hosting a town hall meeting after the George Zimmerman verdict.

Gillum says he has the strongest gun safety record in the gubernatorial field, including beating the NRA in court.
