State House Candidate Calls for Repeal or Reform of Stand Your Ground Law
Sally Laufer is running for Florida House District 65.
PALM HARBOR – In reaction to the recent shootings in the city of Clearwater, Democratic candidate Sally Laufer expresses her condolences to the families of those killed and support for reforming gun laws she characterizes as unsafe.
“Gun laws like ‘Stand Your Ground’ make our community into a bad movie version of the wild west,” Laufer said. “In a perfect world, we’ll never have violence in our community, but that’s just not the reality. When it comes to situations like the one that ended in the killing of Markeis McGlockton, I think we can all agree that it would have been a better situation if the shooter had simply walked away.”
A week after the shooting death of Mr. McGlockton, numerous elected leaders including state Sen. Darryl Rouson,D-St. Petersburg; state Rep. Ben Diamond, D-St. Petersburg; St Petersburg City Council Chairwoman Lisa Wheeler-Bowman; and U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist, D-St. Petersburg, have all expressed support for repealing or reforming the law known as Stand Your Ground.
“Everyone has a right to defend themselves, but it’s been documented that the Stand Your Ground law has escalated homicides especially firearm homicides since it’s passage,” Laufer said “I agree with my fellow Democrats that this law needs to be repealed or reformed, not to abridge anyone’s rights to own a firearm but to create a safer community for everyone where an altercation doesn’t end in tragedy.”
Laufer, a Democrat, is running for the Florida House District 65 seat held by Republican Chris Sprowls, who is seeking reelection. HD 65 includes Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Crystal Beach and Ozona.
Laufer has no Democratic opponents, so the HD 65 race will not be on the Aug. 28 ballot. It will be on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.
