John Funk is running for Seat 5 on the Clearwater City Council.

CLEARWATER – The Suncoast Group of the Sierra Club announced Wednesday (Feb. 14) its endorsement of John Funk in his bid for the Seat 5 on the Clearwater City Council.

“We are proud to endorse John Funk, a political outsider who wants to keep the governance of Clearwater in the hands of its citizens, while moving the city in the direction of renewable energy,” said Dan Huber, Suncoast Sierra Club spokesperson. “We are confident that his commitment to sustainability will be a positive force in the growth and vitality of Clearwater for years to come.”

Funk is a commercial real estate broker with a lifelong history of leadership within community organizations like the Rotary Club and YMCA. He serves as the Chair of the Clearwater Community Development Board, through which he has worked to increase community oversight of municipal development.

The Sierra Club praised Funk’s campaign initiatives that include developing a more effective and transparent strategic plan for the growth of Clearwater, improving the city’s management of financial resources, maintaining public referendum requirements in the Clearwater City Charter to ensure public control of city policy, supporting the development of renewable energy, and ending the recent history of “green-washing” in Clearwater public policy.

John Funk is an energetic, pro-active thinker committed to ensuring the health and well-being of the Clearwater community, and deserves to be elected to the city council, the club said.

Funk is running against incumbent Hoyt Hamilton for the Seat 5 position. The election is March 13. The deadline for requesting a mail ballot is 5 p.m. March 7.
