Sierra Club Endorses Acosta for St. Pete Council

Orlando Acosta is running for the District 3 seat on the St. Petersburg City Council in the Nov. 5 general election.

ST. PETERSBURG – The Suncoast Group of the Sierra Club officially announces its endorsement of Orlando Acosta for the District 3 Seat on the St. Petersburg City Council.

“We are very pleased to endorse Orlando Acosta, a veteran with a progressive agenda focused on environmental policy, social justice, housing affordability, and public safety,” said Dan Huber, Sierra Club spokesperson. “Acosta views climate change and sea level rise as core issues facing St. Petersburg, and strives to make environmentalism part of the city’s political DNA.”

Acosta is a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, small business owner, and Boy Scout leader. Among his priorities, Acosta seeks to expand mass transit options throughout Pinellas County, tackle St. Petersburg’s housing affordability crisis, incentivize smart growth practices with a focus on urban density, and increase funding for water infrastructure repairs. He understands the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in government policy, and wants to develop public-private partnerships to help achieve St. Petersburg’s long-term energy efficiency goals, Huber said..

Orlando Acosta has an exemplary record of service to this nation, and deserves an opportunity to serve St. Petersburg, he said.

Acosta is facing incumbent Ed Montanari in the Nov. 5 general election. All registered voters in St. Petersburg are eligible to vote. The last day to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 7. To register online, go to registertovoteflorida.gov.
