She is seeking a second term on the St. Petersburg City Council.

ST. PETERSBURG – Darden Rice announced today (Feb. 13) she will run for re-election to the St. Petersburg City Council.

“Three years ago, I ran on a platform of ‘St. Pete Strong,’” Rice said. “I’m proud to report that St. Pete is stronger than ever. I’ve spent my time on council continuing the same work I’ve been doing my entire life: expanding opportunity, working with our local businesses, and making St. Petersburg even more inclusive. I believe now, more than ever, we’re strongest when we work together.”

Rice was elected this year to serve as chair of the St. Petersburg City Council. Shortly after, she announced that she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer. She and her doctors are confident in her treatment plan and she expects to fully recover.

“I’m humbled by the outpouring of support these past two weeks,” Rice said. “The emails, phone calls, texts, and letters have been so encouraging as my family and I adjust to my diagnosis. I’ve never let anything stand between me and serving my city, and I’m not about to start now. I will be running an aggressive campaign to talk with voters and let them know my record, how we tackle the issues we face, and what the future looks like for St. Petersburg.”

Rice has been a staunch advocate for numerous causes during her time on council. She has spearheaded efforts for local campaign finance reform, worked with the council and local organizations to improve St. Petersburg’s efficiency and lessen its environmental impact, and promoted inclusive policies.

“There is still work to be done. I’m running for reelection because our job isn’t complete until every person in our city is part of our progress,” Rice said. “That means standing against hatred, working with local businesses to create jobs that pay a living wage, and always doing what’s right and what’s best for our city. I’m honored that the voters have placed their trust in me, and I’ll be asking for their support once again over the coming months.”

Rice represents District 4 on the St. Petersburg council.

The St. Petersburg primary election is Aug. 29. The general election is Nov. 7.
