Realtors Endorse Baker in St. Pete Mayor’s Race
Former Mayor Rick Baker is running to get his old job back.
ST. PETERSBURG – The Pinellas Realtor Organization today (Aug. 9) announced its endorsement of Rick Baker for mayor of St. Petersburg.
“We are proud to recommend Rick Baker for Mayor of St. Petersburg. Leading in an inclusive and non-partisan manner, Baker has a proven record of fixing our aging sewer system, fostering local schools and encouraging economic development,” said Tom Shelly, 2017 chairman of the PRO. “Mayor Baker is an innovator who also added many parks, playgrounds, and bike trails to St. Petersburg when he was mayor. These issues are key to making St. Petersburg a destination where people want to live, work and play.”
Baker said, “I’m honored to receive the Pinellas Realtor Organization’s endorsement. I look forward to continuing to work together to make St. Petersburg a premier destination with a vibrant downtown and strong quality of life in each and every neighborhood of our city.”
With more than 8,000 members, more than 2,500 of whom live in St. Petersburg, the Pinellas Realtor Organization is one of the Tampa Bay region’s largest and most politically active professional trade associations. It was established in 2002 with the merger of the St. Petersburg Suncoast and the Greater Clearwater Association of Realtors.
Baker served as St. Petersburg mayor from 2001 to 2010. He is challenging Mayor Rick Kriseman, who is seeking a second term. Four other candidates are in the race: Jesse Nevel, Paul Congemi, Anthony Cates, and Theresa Lassiter.
The primary is Aug. 29. If no candidate gets at least 50 percent plus one vote, the two top votegetters will move on to the general election on Nov. 7. The St. Petersburg mayor serves four years and earns $180,895 a year.
