Kathleen Peters is running for the District 6 seat on the Pinellas County Commission.

PINELLAS COUNTY – Kathleen Peters is kicking off the new year and her campaign for the Pinellas County Commission with a fundraising reception Thursday (Jan. 4).

Peters, a Republican state representative, is running for the District 6 seat held by fellow Republican John Morroni, who is not seeking reelection. Florida state Rep. Larry Ahern and community activist Barb Haselden, both Republicans, have also announced they are running for the seat.

Peters’ fundraiser is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 4) at the Birchwood, 340 Beach Drive NE in St. Petersburg. Appetizers will be provided and a cash bar is available.

Peters began her political career by serving on the city of South Pasadena’s Planning and Zoning Board. She was then elected to the South Pasadena City Commission in 2008. In June 2009, she was chosen by the commission to serve as mayor for the remainder of the retiring mayor’s term. She was re-elected mayor in March 2010 and state representative in 2012.

The Pinellas County Commission consists of seven members who set policy, adopt ordinances (local laws), approve the county budget and set some property tax rates, as well as establish the requirements for the departments under its control. The commission directly governs all unincorporated areas of the county; municipalities may call upon the county for specialized services. Commissioners generally meet twice a month in regular meetings and hold workshops as needed. Members also serve on other area boards.

Three commission members live in specific residential districts but are elected countywide by all of the voters countywide. Four are elected from single-member districts with only the voters within each specific district electing the commissioner from that district.

Peters is running in District 6, a single member district that includes northeast St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Seminole, a portion of the unincorporated Lealman area and the south beaches including Redington Shores, Redington Beach, North Redington Beach, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, St. Pete Beach and Tierra Verde.
