Kathleen Peters is running for the District 6 seat on the Pinellas County Commission.

TREASURE ISLAND – Kathleen Peters, who is running for the District 6 seat on the Pinellas County Commission, has a fundraiser scheduled tonight (April 17).

The event is 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Club at Treasure Island, 400 Treasure Island Causeway, Treasure Island. Among the hosts: Bill Edwards, Ambassador Mel Sembler, Pinellas County Clerk of Court Ken Burke, Pinellas County Public Defender Bob Dillinger, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, Seminole Mayor Leslie Waters, St. Pete Beach Mayor Al Johnson, Treasure Island Mayor Larry Lunn, North Redington Beach Mayor Bill Queen, and Redington Beach Mayor Nick Simons.

Peters, a Treasure Island resident, is the outgoing District 69 representative in the Florida House. She is a former mayor of South Pasadena and served on the South Pasadena City Commission. She is a former vice president of public affairs at the Clearwater Chamber of Commerce. In the Florida Legislature, Peters served on the Commerce Committee, Ways and Means, Government Operations and Technology Appropriations Subcommittee, and serves as chair for the Energy and Utilities Committee.

In 2015, Peters was awarded the “Legislative Champion” from Florida Partners in Crisis and the Florida Sheriffs Association. She was also named “Legislator of the Year” by the Osteopathic Medical Society, the Suncoast League of Cities, and the Florida Veterinary Medical Association. For her work on homelessness and on mental health, she was named the Florida Housing Coalition’s “Housing Champion,” and received the M.A. Bernstein Award for Mental Health Awareness.

Peters has said she decided not to run for reelection to the House because of the Legislature’s preemption of home rule, the right of local governments to decide how to handle local issues.

The Pinellas County Commission has seven members who adopt ordinances (local laws), approve the county budget and set tax rates, and establish the requirements for the departments under their control. The commission governs all unincorporated areas of the county directly; municipalities may call upon the county for specialized services.

Three of the seven commissioners live in specific residential districts but are elected countywide by all of the voters countywide. Four are elected from single-member districts with only the voters within each specific district electing the commissioner from that district. Each voter votes for a commissioner from their single-member district and the at-large commissioners who are on the ballot.

District 6 is a single-member district that includes a portion of St. Petersburg, the cities of Pinellas Park and Seminole, and the south Pinellas beach communities from Redington Shores in the north to Tierra Verde in the south. The seat is currently held by John Morroni, who is not seeking reelection.

Peters has two opponents so far – state Rep. Larry Ahern and community activist Barb Haselden. All are Republicans.

The primary is Aug. 28. The general election is Nov. 6.
