NextGen Florida plans to register thousands of students during welcome week on 43 campuses across Florida. Volunteers are scheduled to be at St. Petersburg College today.

ST. PETERSBURG – Volunteers from NextGen Florida plan a voter registration drive today (Aug. 23) at St Petersburg College as students arrive to campus for the fall semester.

NextGen’s welcome back bash is scheduled for noon at the Quad on SPC’s Gibbs Campus, 6605 Fifth Ave. N in St. Petersburg.

The welcome back bash at SPC is part of a larger movement by NextGen America to register students to vote in the Nov. 6 general election. The NextGen group was scheduled to be at the Tampa campus of the University of South Florida on Wednesday (Aug. 22). (Click here for story.) They are seeking to register 15,000 young Floridians as they’re moving into college.

The overall goal of the drive is not simply to register students, but to motivate them to become involved and to turn out more than half a million young people to vote in 11 states. In Florida, NextGen will engage students on 43 campuses across Florida and will participate in several major events.

“Young Americans are energized like never before. Our generation can make history in November, but only if we put in the work in August,” said NextGen America National Organizing Director Erin Carhart. “Students are coming back to school this year ready to reshape the politics of this country, and this fall, we’re going to make sure they have the tools to do so.”

In addition to its peer-to-peer organizing efforts, NextGen will spend $45,000 on campus advertising just during the first two weeks of school on each campus, reaching 400,000 young voters in Florida and asking them to pledge to vote. Move-in ads will emphasize the power of young people as a voting block and run in print and on Facebook, SnapChat and YouTube.

NextGen America organizers say this is the largest youth organizing effort in American history. Organizers have been on the ground since 2017 — registering, engaging and mobilizing young people across the 11 states to make their voices heard this November. With an initial $3.5 million investment and more than 100 organizers already on the ground, NextGen Florida says it has already registered more than 23,000 young Floridians to vote this year.

NextGen Florida is this state’s arm of NextGen America, which was founded originally as NextGen Climate by businessperson and philanthropist Tom Steyer in 2013. NextGen America says it acts politically to prevent climate disaster, promote prosperity, and protect the fundamental rights of every American.
