U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson has endorsed St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman in his quest for a second term.

ST. PETERSBURG –  U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-FL, has formally endorsed Mayor Rick Kriseman for reelection in the St. Petersburg municipal election.

“I’m proud to support Mayor Rick Kriseman for reelection. He’s built consensus on commonsense policies, like preparing for climate change, that have made St. Petersburg a better place to live for everyone. Rick is the kind of leader we need more of in Florida,” Nelson said.

Kriseman said, “Sen. Bill Nelson has set himself apart as a true statesman. Our senator always puts results over politics. I’m humbled and honored to have Senator Nelson’s support, and to continue working closely to move St. Pete forward.”

Nelson’s endorsement is the latest example of Kriseman’s growing momentum, according to a statement from the Kriseman campaign.

Kriseman is running for his second term as St. Petersburg mayor. He is facing challenges from Baker, Jesse Nevel, Paul Congemi, Anthony Cates, and Theresa Lassiter.

The primary is Aug. 29. If no candidate gets at least 50 percent plus one vote, the two top votegetters will move on to the general election on Nov. 7. The St. Petersburg mayor serves four years and earns $180,895 a year.
