Learned Wins NAACP Straw Poll

Andrew Learned is running for the District 15 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

VALRICO – During the past five days, Andrew Learned has won the Hillsborough County Branch NAACP Community Political Forum Straw Poll, as well as received the endorsements of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Tampa Bay and the Hillsborough LGBTA Democratic Caucus.

The Hillsborough County Branch NAACP hosted a community political forum and straw poll Thursday (Aug. 9) at Middleton High School in Tampa. Learned won the straw poll with 37.71 percent of the vote — 66 out of 175 total votes cast.

Over the next few days, the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Tampa Bay and the Hillsborough LGBTA Democratic Caucus both announced their endorsements of Learned. Learned’s campaign said he appears to have the momentum in the race, boosted by a growing list of endorsements and grassroots activism. Learned has received more than a dozen endorsements from state, local, and national progressive organizations and individuals, including U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa; VoteVets; Indivisible; Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida; and Our Revolution Tampa Bay.

“I’m completely humbled to see so many people come together and support my campaign to flip the 15th Congressional District and bring a new generation of leadership to Washington,” Learned said. “I’ve been in the community for years and it means the world to me that I have such an amazing base of grassroots supporters.”

Learned is a Democratic candidate for Florida’s 15th Congressional District. He served nine years of active duty as an officer in the US Navy, including three Middle East deployments, and is currently a Lieutenant in the Navy Reserve. He is the owner of a neighborhood learning center and currently resides in Brandon.

Florida’s 15th Congressional District encompasses portions of Hillsborough, Polk and Lake counties.He is facing two Democratic opponents in the primary Kristen Carlson and Raymond “Ray” Pena.

The primary election is Aug. 28.
