Sally Laufer is running for the District 65 seat in the Florida House of Representatives.

PALM HARBOR – Sally Laufer has scheduled a campaign launch in her race for the state House of Representatives.

Laufer, a Democrat, is running for the seat held by Republican Chris Sprowls, who is running for reelection. Laufer said she decided to run because she believes the country is headed down the wrong path and residents need a better option.

“I am very troubled by the direction of our state and country,” Laufer said. “I chose to run as state representative when I saw no one was challenging Chris Sprowls. Considering his voting record on issues such as gun safety, education, Planned Parenthood funding, and fracking in Florida, our constituents needed a better option.”

Laufer describes herself as a wife, mother, grandmother, nurse and community activist. She grew up in Valley Stream, NY, and went to the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut for a degree in nursing. She met her husband, Erel, while working at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Hartford, CT. They moved to New York for him to finish his residency in general surgery and then to the University of Florida for a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Laufer has been in Palm Harbor for 34 years raising their three daughters. She has four grandchildren.

Laufer said she would work for stricter gun control, funding for Planned Parenthood, banning fracking and offshore drilling, environmental protection, and better pay for teachers and funding for schools.

Her campaign strategy, Laufer said, is not to rely on a predicted “blue wave,” but to build a broad grassroots coalition made up of all voters.

“Blue wave or not, my campaign will be pushing to speak to as many voters as possible,” Laufer said. “Our plan is to build a broad grassroots coalition that shows all voters, Republicans, Democrats and Independents, that I can represent our district better by building a community based on caring for one another rather than division.”

HD 65 includes Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Crystal Beach and Ozona.

Laufer has no Democratic opponents, so the HD 65 race will not be on the Aug. 28 ballot. It will be on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.
