Commission member John Tornga is facing a challenge from Jeff Gow in the Nov. 6 city election.

DUNEDIN – Deborah Kynes was re-elected to the Dunedin City Commission when no one qualified to run against her by the deadline.

However, John Tornga, who is currently serving as vice mayor, has an opponent. Jeff Gow will face Tornga in the Nov. 6 municipal election for Seat 4 on the commission. Commissioners serve four-year terms and are paid $11,500 a year.

Kynes served on the commission from 1999 – 2009 and was again elected in 2014. She served as vice president of the Institute for Strategic Public Policy Solutions Board at St. Petersburg College and is a founding member of the Village Square (Pinellas). She served as chair of the Utilities, Natural Resources & Public Works Legislative Committee for the Florida League of Cities from 2017 until this year and serves on the Dunedin Fine Arts Center Advisory Council. She is the city liaison to the Dunedin Fine Art Center and the North Pinellas Cultural Alliance. She also serves on the Mease Manor board of trustees and was appointed last month to the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.

Tornga was elected to the Dinedin commission in November 2014 and was appointed vice mayor Dec. 15. He serves as Dunedin’s representative on Forward Pinellas. He has also been appointed by Forward Pinellas to serve as a representative on Tampa Bay’s Transportation Management Area Leadership Group representing Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties.  He is their representative on the Pinellas Trail Security Trask Force.  John additionally serves on Pinellas County PSTA Board as Dunedin’s representative.  He serves on the Florida League of Cities Transportation and Intergovernmental Relations Policy Committee.

Gow is  a Dunedin native who has a degree in economics from Florida State University. He currently works in accounting in the solid waste/recycling department at the city of Clearwater. That position, he said, has  has given him the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of government. He has said he wants to make residents “part of the process, not just part of the agenda.”
