CLEARWATER – Tom Keller, a candidate for Seat 4 on the Clearwater City Council, wants more attention given to sports enthusiasts in the city.

“We have a lot for baseball fans with the Phillies and the Threshers, but I’d like to see more local events for the thousands of golfers, anglers and tennis players in Clearwater,” Keller said.

Even the Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce recently sponsored a golf tournament that took place in Seminole rather than Clearwater, he said. Most fishing tournaments are held out of St. Petersburg even though the city of Clearwater operates marinas. Public tennis courts are few and far between, which often causes crowded conditions.

“The city sponsors many great events that draw tourists year-round, but not enough is being done for residents,” said Keller, who’s an active golfer, angler and tennis player. “If I’m elected to the city council, I will get together with sports-minded people in our communities and do some brainstorming on how we can better support the facilities we have and create more sporting events for Clearwater residents.”

Keller, who in 1997 became the Men’s National Barefoot Water Ski Champion, said he still stays in shape by keeping active.

“I’m all for building our tourism industry because that’s a great revenue source to keep businesses thriving,” he said. “At the same time, the health benefits of staying active makes it important for our city to find ways to increase the enjoyment of those casting a rod, hitting a wedge or swinging a racket — and I pledge to do that.”

Keller is facing David Allbritton in the nonpartisan March 13 election for Clearwater City Council. They are running for the seat currently held by Bill Jonson, who is terming out of office.

Monday (Feb. 12) is the last day to register to vote in the Clearwater city election. Online registration is available. The deadline to request a mail ballot is 5 p.m. March 7.
