TAMPA – State Rep. Richard Corcoran, speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, has endorsed Aakash Patel for Hillsborough County Commission.

“I’ve gotten to know Aakash through his work with the Early Learning Coalition and have seen him put conservative initiatives to work to bring early education to more children in the state of Florida,” said Corcoran, a Republican from Land ‘o’ Lakes. “I appreciate all he has done and I fully support his efforts to become the next Republican County Commissioner from District 7 in Hillsborough County.”

Patel, who was appointed by Gov. Rick Scott to serve as chair of the Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County, said, “I am so very honored to have the support of such a true conservative leader as Speaker Corcoran. We have worked on education initiatives in Florida and I respect and share his strong conservative values. I am honored by his endorsement.”

Patel, the founder of Elevate, is running for the District  seat on the Hillsborough County Commission. Patel had announced a run for the District 1 seat, which is held by Republican Sandra Murman, who had announced she would run for the countywide District 7 seat. But Murman has since decided to remain in the District 1 seat and Patel decided to run for the District 7 seat.

“I have walked neighborhoods throughout District 1, I have spoken to nearly every Republican Club in Hillsborough County, and I have been honored by the outpouring of support from many voters outside of District 1,” Patel said. “I want to continue this momentum as I move forward through the countywide Election on Aug. 28.”

The battle for the District 7 seat is crowded with Republicans Patel, Cherie L. Denham, and Todd Marks; Democrats Ray Chiarmonte, Charles Davis III, Mark Nash, Kimberly D. Overman, Corey L. Reynolds, and Sky U. White; and Green Party candidate Kim O’Conner.

The primary is Aug. 28 and the general election is Nov. 6.
