Janet Cruz said Mayor Rick Kriseman will stand up to “harmful GOP policies to keep St. Pete moving forward.”

ST. PETERSBURG – The Democratic leader of the Florida House of Representatives came to St. Petersburg on Saturday (Aug. 12) to stump for the reelection of Mayor Rick Kriseman.

Janet Cruz spoke to the first shift of volunteer workers before heading out on the campaign trail with Kriseman. Cruz, from Tampa, represents House District 62 in the Florida House of Representatives.

“I’ve known Mayor Kriseman for quite some time and I am so proud to be supporting my friend for reelection. Rick has done incredible things for St. Pete that have made life better for everyone who lives in the Tampa Bay area,” Cruz said. “He’s lowered crime, brought jobs and economic development here, and tackled climate change head on. Rick has always stood up for what’s right, and I know he will stand up to harmful GOP policies to keep St. Pete moving forward.”

Kriseman said, “I admire the work Leader Cruz does to bring accountability and common sense to Tallahassee. She knows the importance of standing up for what you believe, which is why I’m honored to have her support.”

Although the St. Petersburg’s mayoral election, like municipal elections elsewhere in Pinellas, are nonpartisan, the Florida Democrats are putting money and effort into Kriseman’s reelection. An Aug. 5 news posting on the Florida Democrats website, notes that “members of the Florida Democratic Party‘s clubs, caucuses, and local Democratic Executive Committees are all coming together and working hard to help get out the vote in St. Petersburg. Democrats from Key West to Pensacola helped make thousands of calls to mobilize progressive voters in St. Pete. Locally, dozens of Democratic activists came out to knock on hundreds of doors in St. Pete for the Kriseman Campaign’s day of action.”

Florida Democratic party chair Stephen Bittel is quoted in the item saying, “While Republicans like Donald Trump and Rick Baker continue to campaign on a message of fear and divisiveness, Mayor Kriseman is campaigning on a strong record of progressive accomplishments, and is a champion of human rights and the environment. The Florida Democratic Party is proud to support leaders like Mayor Kriseman who will advocate for commonsense, progressive policies at the local level and stand up to the Trump agenda.”

Kriseman is running for his second term as St. Petersburg mayor. He is facing challenges from Baker, Jesse Nevel, Paul Congemi, Anthony Cates, and Theresa Lassiter.

The primary is Aug. 29. If no candidate gets at least 50 percent plus one vote, the two top votegetters will move on to the general election on Nov. 7. The St. Petersburg mayor serves four years and earns $180,895 a year.
