Barb Haselden is running for the Pinellas County Commission. The election is November 2018.

PINELLAS COUNTY – Barb Haselden, who is running for the District 6 seat on the Pinellas County Commission, has rescheduled a fundraiser.

The fundraiser had to be rescheduled because of Hurricane Irma. The new date is 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Burgess, 120 Park St., St. Petersburg. The Burgesses are co-sponsoring the event with Mr. and Mrs. Jim McKinnon.

Haselden is a St. Petersburg Republican who is president of Hometown Insurors. She was a founder and current president of South Pinellas 912, a taxpayer-centered citizen activist group with about 1,000. Haselden is perhaps best know as the organizer and leader of No Tax for Tracks, a registered political committee, that she led while successfully spearheading a countywide campaign to defeat Greenlight Pinellas, a ballot referendum to build a light rail line from St Petersburg to Clearwater.

The Pinellas County Commission is a seven-member group that adopts ordinances (local laws), approves the County budget, sets the tax rate, and establishes the requirements for the departments under its control. The board governs all unincorporated areas of the county directly; municipalities may call upon the county for specialized services. The commission is also responsibile for hiring a county administrator who oversees the day-to-day activities of the county.

Of the seven commissioners, three live in specific residential districts but are elected countywide by all Pinellas voters. Four are elected from single-member districts with only the voters within each specific district electing the commissioner from that district. Each voter votes for a commissioner from their single-member district and the at-large commissioners who are on the ballot.

The District 6 seat is a single-member district that includes northeast St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Seminole and the southern beach communities from St. Pete Beach to Redington Shores. The seat is currently held by Republican John Morroni who is not running for reelection. Haselden and Republican state Reps. Larry Ahern and Kathleen Peters have announced they are running for the seat.

The election is in November 2018.
