Corey Givens Jr. is running for the St. Petersburg City Council District 6 seat.

ST. PETERSBURG – City Council candidate Corey Givens Jr. will host a volunteer training and petition drive Saturday (May 13).

Givens’ “Day of Action” will begin at 9 a.m. at the Enoch Davis Center, 1111 18th Ave S. A continental breakfast will be served to volunteers.

Givens is running for the District 6 seat currently held by Karl Nurse, who is terming out. District 6 includes portions of downtown, Midtown, Old Northeast, Bahama Shores and other Southeast neighborhoods.

“We’ve decided to qualify by petition, rather than paying to have my name placed on the ballot. Through my community activism and service to our city, I’ve learned that the best way to connect with voters is with boots on the ground, not money in the bank,” Givens said.

Volunteers will be trained in phone banking, canvassing, and voter registration.

“This is a movement, not a campaign. With so much disconnect in Washington and Tallahassee, we need voice here at home, that will speak unity where there’s division,” Givens said. “We’re rebuilding and reorganizing locally, by bringing folks together who have never been politically engaged before.”

Givens is also offering summer internship opportunities to high school and college students who may be interested in getting involved in local government.

Qualifying opens at 8 a.m. June 8 and ends at 5 p.m. June 23. The primary is Aug. 29 and the general election is Nov. 7. Other District 6 candidates: Akile Cainion, Gina Driscoll, James Scott, James Jackson, Sharon Russ, Maria Scruggs and Justin Bean.
